Guide to finding your perfect lip color!

Choosing the right lipstick shade can be an intimidating process with all of the color options if you don’t know what you are looking for.

To help make your selection easier, first you should determine what the undertones of your skin are. This can be done easily by looking at your wrist. If your veins appear bluer you have cool pink undertones, if they are more green you have warm yellow undertones, and if it is hard to tell if they are more blue or green you most likely have neutral undertones. Lucky you! You can wear almost any color.

Figuring out your skin tone will help you figure out your perfect lip color .

You will want to wear lip colors that have similar undertones as you skin. For those with cool toned skin shades with blue and violet undertones will look best. If you have warm toned skin you will look great with warm undertones in your lip color. Unless you are going for a specific look such as something editorial or for a costume, stay away from gray/ashy toned colors as they tend to wash you out and is unflattering.

Another great way to choose a color is to base it off of the color of your skin. Those with olive skin typically have neutral undertones and can wear most colors. If you have fairer skin, try to avoid anything that is too light or too yellow, these will wash you out. Darker skin should also avoid anything too light, deeper richer shades look best.

You can also choose shades to compliment your eye color. Blue eyes look great with corals colors, hazel/green eyes are best with cherry red shades, and those with brown eyes should choose more rosy pink hues.

As well as eye color, certain shades will compliment your hair color. Blondes, especially lighter cooler blondes, choose something with pink tones. Our auburn red toned locks should choose colors with violet undertones. For those brunettes, you have to most choices, orange, red and violet tones will look great.

The best way to choose is lip color is to try it on. My favorite place to try new shades is the M.A.C. store or counter in a department store. They are great at sanitizing makeup before and after you try it on, just make sure to completely remove a color before trying on the next. I suggest choosing a few you want to try, and testing them from lightest to darkest.

I wish I had, had all of this information when i started wearing lipstick, definitely would’ve saved me a lot of money and stained/chapped lips.

Just remember the #1 rule when it comes to choosing a lip color is, if YOU like it, WEAR IT!
